To craft our flagship Chardonnay, this exploration took us to California’s Russian River Valley, where layers of ocean fog cool the vines that grow in the region’s famous Goldridge sandy loam soils. Reflecting this world-class terroir, this vibrant and sophisticated Chardonnay combines white flower aromatics with enticing lemon custard and stone fruit flavors.
Varietal Content: 100% Chardonnay; Cooperage: 100% French Oak, 35% New Oak, 65% Second Vintage
Offering all the richness and complexity that has made Chardonnay from the Russian River Valley famous, this wine displays inviting aromas of lemon custard, crème brûlée, vanilla and light caramel, as well as hints of acacia blossom and honeysuckle. On the palate, the mouthfeel is smooth and appealing with great mid-palate weight and seamless acid from start to finish. Citrus abounds throughout with lemon and orange peel eventually giving way to a long finish with subtle notes of toasted almond.
The 2011 growing season was one of the coolest in memory. While unusual spring weather resulted in a smaller crop, the cool season was near perfect for developing pure, intense varietal flavors in our white grapes. Berries were small, and yields were down by 15 to 20 percent, adding to overall concentration and texture. The long, temperate growing season allowed the grapes to develop slowly with our Chardonnay coming in at optimal ripeness with excellent natural acidity, before the October rains.
